Applications Engineer

Location: Spokane, WA and Ashland, VA


Pearson is looking for an Applications Engineer to bring together Pearson products, OEM products, and emerging technologies into efficient packing and palletizing solutions that will meet or exceed customer needs. The qualified individual will design solution floor plans in AutoCAD, perform cycle time analysis and/or robot simulations, compile cost estimates, prepare quotes/proposals, and assist the sales team in presenting the proposed solution. This role requires a dedication to the continuous improvement of common tools and processes that streamline the proposal generation process.


  • Work directly with the sales team and customers to gain a clear understanding of customer requirements to determine line configuration, and ensuring Pearson’s proposal is accurate and highly competitive
  • Support the sales team in presenting the proposed solution through direct meetings or conference calls with the customer, as required
  • Work closely with the Vice President of Applications Engineering/Product Management to ensure the systems library and other AE tools are maintained and improved upon. Assist with sales training and communicating marketing collateral
  • Work with internal and external resources to effectively prepare supporting data for proposals and ensure an effective transition/hand-off of won opportunities to Project Management
  • Travel as needed to fulfill responsibilities


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and technical/professional experience
  • Minimum five years of experience in engineering, controls, robotics, material handling, and systems integration
  • Strong technical understanding of the following: case erectors and case sealers, top-load robotic packers, robotic palletizers/depalletizers, stretch wrappers, conveyors, fillers, metal detectors, coding machinery, etc.
  • Documented experience designing and presenting complete end-of-line packaging solutions
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD to generate floor plans for proposed solutions
  • FANUC and Allen-Bradley controls/programming experience is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize FANUC Robot simulation tools to validate cycle time and reach
  • Ability to organize activities and multi-task in a fast-paced environment, while meeting aggressive deadlines
  • Sound knowledge of sales and production processes
